Turnaround seems to be the major theme of my life right now. With everything, in every aspect of life.
Of course, there's the coup. And Parler's hacking and all. It's really fucking stupid, and you love seeing the consequences of that stuff. The no-fly list. The change of power. The entitlement crashing down.
The news cycle made me research Q and the far right movement. This shit slipped right past me all summer because I was so into the BLM stuff. I didn't realize shit about this other half of america. it's so weird, seeing it from the outside.
I'm reaching the end of the first semester of my teaching license. I swore that when I was done with my Master's I'd finish formally educating myself, but now I can tell that I really need to be IB certified to move up in life.
Because I'm looking for a new job, and I think I landed one. In Istanbul, one of my favorite cities in the world. If I land it, I'll move there in like July. God, can you imagine? Hookah, cats, Mediterranean food, seagulls. Walking everywhere all the time. Art. Pfft sign me up.
The high school I teach at is ending it's first semester right now too. Finals are this week. That means it's a time of reflection before I get those damn tests back, and they're gonna eat my life up towards the back half of this week. Starting tomorrow. But then, I have Chinese New Year break, and I'll have so much time to dive into a social life again.
I have a list of everything I want to finish, accomplish, do, or try this break. I can't go anywhere really, so I'm going to do something different every single day, and with a different group of people. I've stayed cooped up all year. The winter depression this year was a travesty.

Date: 2021-01-12 09:51 pm (UTC)When do you find out about the dream job? I hope that works out for you.
Good luck with the grading of papers and finalizing your certification. How much longer do you have until you're done?
LoTR and DnD are ♥

Date: 2021-01-14 12:45 am (UTC)I should finish the license here in like May... but the bureaucracy is backed up because of covid. So, you know. Who knows.
I have a second interview with Istanbul in a week or so. I think I basically already have the gig though.

Date: 2021-01-15 01:17 pm (UTC)Good luck with the licensing. I don't know about you but I'd be driven nuts if I didn't have that light of the end of the proverbial tunnel. I do hope you get it in May.
Keep us posted for the job! Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Date: 2021-01-15 05:31 pm (UTC)My best friend just moved to the Dayton, OH area last year (her fiance has family there) and she has said the same thing about the right wing having a strong enough foothold there. It is a good thing that one of the republicans who voted for impeaching Trump was from the Cleveland area. There is hope yet!

Date: 2021-01-23 03:33 pm (UTC)The neighbor still has his "creepy Joe" sign out... and I think there's still a small trump sign by his mailbox. But I assume, at this point, he's intending it to mean the Anglo-slang word for "fart" and not the dreadful president that just faded into Florida.
I hope your friend is settling in, despite the right-wing activism. How is she doing? If she needs a breath of fresh air, I recommend a visit to nearby Yellow Springs. She'll see that there are still sane people. Although Montgomery County (where Dayton is) tends to be a bit more democratic. There's still a rurality in Ohio... just like anywhere, they have a tendency to vote conservatively. Ohio is peppered with poor towns and dying ones that Trump never would've visited or cared to hear about (much like die-hard Trumpist and local political idiot, Jim Jordan), and I think it's that hypocrisy (among a lot of others) that angers me the most. Appalachian Ohio, so devastated by living with antiquated ideas, and rusting and falling in on itself, mostly voted for Trump—and I can't understand that, either. I kept wanting to tell them, "What do you think he's going to do for you?" Besides lie about coal and all that... and ohshitdonteevengetmestarted... Maybe your friend could do some volunteering for the Democrats... or for something along those lines that would help her bring common sense to those unfortunate souls who have allowed themselves to be misguided! I tried to volunteer for the democratic candidate here running for Congress, but she never came to this area and spent more time in the richy parts of the district. That figures. She is also from one of the wealthiest cities in Ohio, so I can't see that it's much of a difference. Though I still wanted her to win, but she took only 32% of the vote, I believe (just recounting from memory), which is very sad. When the change starts coming, if it ever does, it'll have to be from people willing to think for themselves and not be influenced by parents, ancestors, selective media and a willingness to believe whatever they want regardless of facts.
Honestly, just glad someone else is in office that's actually presidential. There was a good cartoon the other day that showed the White House and a big banner hanging from the front, and it said, "Under
NewManagement." That sums it up.no subject
Date: 2021-01-25 03:29 pm (UTC)Thank you for the article! I'm going to check it out to see whom else is on the list. It brings a bit of comfort to see that one of the (local to me) conservative politicians is on that list to want to see Trump impeached. My early years were formed when I lived on Long Island and felt very much progressive in my thinking always -- so it's been a total surprise to see the "moderate mix" here and to see conservativism at its "finest" (and really, that's with a healthy dose of sarcasm). I'm still shaking my head from that "Trump Boat Party" that was hosted on Canandaigua Lake last summer. (Which, the lake is literately a five-to-seven minute drive from my house.) At least two hundred people were there for it? Shock, disgust and horror were the least of mine - and others - emotions when it was seen in action. I have to wonder how many of them ended up getting Covid, to be honest. Its starting to pick up here.
I'm sorry to hear that your neighbor has their "creepy Joe" signage out. You'd think that after all that went on, they'd feel the need to take that down. My neighbor still has his pick up truck plastered with Trumpean propaganda and I'm still doing my best to keep away from him. I don't know how anyone could keep that kind of crazy so public. :/
My best friend is doing okay, from what I see. (I haven't had a chance to talk to her in the past week or so.) Thank you for asking! I'll pass along the info you've provided here, I'm sure she needs some kind of break -- she's a mom of two kids (her elder daughter is eight, her younger daughter is two-and-a-half) and is homeschooling her elder daughter. She's also planning an elopement as she needs health insurance (her fiance has a good job and coverage). So I know she's busy, but doing some kind of volunteer work may give her a focus outside of the various hobby/side projects she's working on.
Although that candidate that you were volunteering for didn't work out, at least you have some experience with the process and are able to do it again if you're feeling the need / find another candidate whom you want to see in office. I don't understand why anyone would want to vote for Trump or would want to keep him in office, he's a con man, plain and simple.
I agree, its good to have someone presidential in office. I don't particular like Biden, either however, its easier to work with a system for change under an oligarchy than a fascist regime. There's a lot of work as a country that we need to do, and at least we're in a step in the right direction.

Date: 2021-01-15 04:57 pm (UTC)I haven't seen LOTR in ages. Fifteen years, maybe...? I've been meaning to watch it again but just can't seem to stay motivated that direction. I still haven't learned to read books and watch movies at the same time. A rewatch with someone who's equally interested in the film (and might've read the book) would be nice. I might be a smidgen jealous.
Good luck with the licensing! If you're feeling a lack of motivation, you could post about your woes and the rest of us will buoy you up.
You have IRL friends? Wow, what's that like? That was the awful thing about moving... leaving people behind. Have fun with them, especially cute girl. ;)

Date: 2021-01-16 05:58 am (UTC)Luckily, living in Shanghai means I get to spend time with people in person. I can't imagine what it's been like for Americans (responsible ones, I mean) this year.
I knowwww what that moving thing's like. Lord, I have switched countries 3 times and in the states, I feel like I moved constantly.
